In Fall 2022, College of Music Assistant Professor of Jazz Violin, Scott Tixier, performed solo jazz violin at the Carnegie Hall world premiere of the Jon Batiste composition, “American Symphony.” Tixier appears in the Netflix-produced documentary and trailer chronicling the Batiste creation of the original symphony while his wife, Suleika Jaouad, undergoes cancer treatment.
Winners of the 2022-2023 National Opera Association Opera Production Competition announced. The judges gave a total of 24 awards from the 87 applicants. The University of North Texas College of Music production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” by André Previn & Philip Littell was named Division VII 1st place winner. UNT Associate Professor and Music Director of Opera, Stephanie Rhodes Russell, conducted, Taylor Rachel Carnes was stage director, Donna Marquet was scenic designer and Michael Robinson designed costumes. Crystal Gerrard-Ramirez, UNT Assistant Professor of Music Education, published an article, A Completely Different World': A Counterstory of Transfronterizx Experiences, in the Journal of Research in Music Education.
The Recording Academy has nominated College of Music alumnus Nathan Carlisle (BM ’06), tenor, who played the role of Drag Queen #4 as a member of The Metropolitan Opera Chorus in the Best Opera Recording category for Blanchard: Champion. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducted the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Chorus.
Rob Wilkerson (MM ’00) included on the GRAMMY nominated Dynamic Maximum Tension performed by Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society in the category of Best Large Jazz Ensemble.
Bass Cameron Beauchamp has been nominated in the category of Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance as an ensemble member of Roomful of Teeth for the album Rough Magic.
Dave Pietro (BM ’87) is included on the GRAMMY-nominated Dynamic Maximum Tension performed by Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society in the category of Best Large Jazz Ensemble.
Alumnus Tobe Nwigwe, along with his wife Fat Nwigwe’s song, They Want It, But No, is included on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Music From and Inspired By which is nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media (Various Artists). He is a rapper, singer, actor and a former linebacker for UNT's Mean Green Football team.
Roomful of Teeth bass-baritone Thann Scoggin (BM ’04, MS ’07) has been nominated in the category of Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance as an ensemble member for the album Rough Magic.
The American Musicological Society has bestowed its Lewis Lockwood Award, which goes to the best book by an early career scholar, to @UNT Associate Professor of Music History, Rebecca Dowd Geoffroy-Schwinden for her first book, “From Servant to Savant: Musical Privilege, Property, and the French Revolution,” published by Oxford University Press, 2022.
Lecrae (BAAS ʼ02) and Tasha Cobbs Leonard have been nominated for Your Power in the Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song category.
Also, Lecrae was nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for Church Clothes 4. He studied sociology and electronic media as a UNT student and was influenced by the College of Music – see the connection story at the link below.
Tenor David Portillo (MM’05) received a 2024 Grammy nomination as principal soloist for Corigliano: The Lord Of Cries. Gil Rose was producer and conducted the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Odyssey Opera Chorus.

Twenty percussion faculty and students of the University of North Texas College of Music presented concerts and clinics at Poland’s Krakow Academy of Music, The Opole School of Music and served as featured soloists/judges and clinicians for Europe's largest percussion festival, Drum Fest and the Polish National Marimba/Vibraphone Competition. Former faculty member Nicholas Williams (BM ‘97, MM ‘04, DMA ‘09) conducts the Opole Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra involving UNT students and faculty.

The Sarasota Music Festival (Florida) hosted University of North Texas Professor of Clarinet, Kimberly Cole Luevano, as Summer Music Faculty.
Organ performance student, Ryan Giraldi, was selected as recipient of the 2023 M. Louise Miller–Paul E. Knox Scholarship. The award is presented annually by the Greater Bridgeport, Connecticut chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
