The string area at the University of North Texas is one of the most comprehensive string programs in the world

The UNT String Area has a strong tradition of classical instruction in all areas. The College of Music also hosts the largest Early Music program in the United States with Baroque lessons for string students, and now provides instruction in Jazz/Crossover Strings. Other pertinent offerings include six Full-Tuition undergraduate and graduate string quartets, string pedagogy and literature classes, the New Music ensemble Nova and award-winning Entrepreneurship classes.

String students from UNT have achieved success in all aspects of the profession, winning 3 Grammys, an Oscar and many major competitions (Paganini, Fischoff, ISB, ASTA). Our former students hold concertmaster, principal and section positions in leading US orchestras (including National, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Baltimore, Utah, Chicago Lyric Opera) and a vast array of international orchestras. They also perform in many string quartets (Ulysses Quartet) and alternative styles ensembles (Mannheim Steamroller, Snarky Puppy) and hold major teaching and leadership positions throughout the world.

In addition to the comprehensive offerings at UNT, string students perform in 22 well-paying professional orchestras in the broad Dallas-Ft. Worth cultural region. They also hone their teaching skills through many Teaching Fellowships and Assistantships, the UNT String Project and from private teaching in public schools in the region.
