20th Annual Pirastro Strings Virtual Elite Soloists Program for Double Bass | May 25 – June 2, 2023

The 20th Annual Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program will accept only 5 participants to study with Jeff Bradetich in a virtual environment. Last summer’s virtual program brought students together from five continents.

Special Guest: International Solo Artist Dominik Wagner, winner of the 2nd Bradetich Foundation International Double Bass Solo Competition.

This program offers free tuition and the Pirastro company will supply participants with free strings of their choice. The schedule for this highly individualized program includes: Daily private lessons, solo master classes and a final virtual concert. This program is designed for aspiring young artists and professional orchestra players. 

To qualify, participants must have three major solo works ready for study and one for performance.

The UNT Marching Percussion Camp trains high school percussionists each summer in the tradition of the world-renowned North Texas Drum Line. 

Individuals are encouraged to attend to improve their drumming skills.

• Performance in a skill level-based ensemble.

• Expert guidance from established teachers.

• 10 hours a day of instruction.

• Get motivated for fall Drum Line!

Students will participate in sectionals and ensembles focusing on establishing strong drumming fundamentals and expressive musical concepts.   Faculty and guest artists will present clinics designed to encourage dedicated practice habits, listening skills, and progressive percussion techniques.

American Percussion Seminar | June 5 - June 9, 2023

 The American Percussion Seminar is an exciting five-day seminar designed to serve high school, college and professional level concert percussionists. Activities include private and group lessons with world class instructors, master classes, clinics, student and faculty performances, and technique labs focused on all aspects of keyboard percussion performance.  Participants will also play in percussion ensembles directed by the Seminar faculty.

The American Percussion Seminar includes sessions on jazz vibraphone in which students will have lessons and master classes on improvisation with jazz vibraphonist Ed Smith (UNT and SMU Percussion faculty member).

Flute! Masterclass in Repertoire and Performance | June 9 – June 11, 2023

Flute! Repertoire and Performance Masterclass is a performance class for advanced performers, and these sessions emphasize musical performance and preparation. Daily classes include warmup exercises, tone/technique development, articulation studies, interaction of performer and listener, and the master class concludes with a concert by members of the class.

Lynn Seaton Jazz Double Bass Workshop | June 11 - June 16, 2023

Instructors: Lynn Seaton

The workshop will offer an intensive week of study and performance opportunities for the jazz upright bassist. Classes include bass line development bass ensembles, and daily sessions on technique. Also, participants will have an opportunity to perform with a rhythm section and be coached. Outstanding faculty concerts will be presented throughout the week. It starts with registration early Monday morning and concludes with the Friday evening Bass Bash concert where ALL the participants will perform. The Lynn Seaton Jazz Double Bass Workshop is open to advanced high school (14+), college, professional, and serious amateur bassists.

Prof. Lynn Seaton has established himself as one of the leading performers and teachers of jazz bass in the world today. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his Annual Jazz Double Bass Workshop. This intimate workshop is limited to 15 upright bass players. (The UNT Combo Workshop accepts electric and upright bass players.) These spots are first-come/first-served, and thus your spot is not fully secured until you have made your Final Payment and completed registration.

The Beginners and Intermediate Bass Camp is designed for any aged beginner or intermediate player providing lots of playing and lots of fun. In addition, students will be taught by some of the top teachers of young bassists in the country and perform together in a grand finale Bass Bash Concert.

Flute! Fundamentals | June 30 – July 2, 2023

Flute! Fundamentals is a workshop for performers and educators interested in developing teaching and performing skills.  Participants observe master teaching and interact with artist Mary Karen Clardy coaching students of all levels in daily sessions.  Basics of embouchure, breathing, tone production, phrasing, articulation, vibrato, and technical skills are addressed, with practical exercises/solutions for common flute problems given throughout the class.

UNT International Jazz Strings Workshop | CANCELLED FOR 2023

Open to all levels. Each day will be covering a different topic to provide the basics of improvisation on orchestral string instruments other than double bass. Includes jazz vocabulary, phrasing, ear training, bow articulations, and left-hand techniques, and solo development, as well as discussions of live performance amplification and EQ. Build your repertoire by exploring jazz standards. Participation is capped at 30, so register early.

THE WORKSHOP INCLUDES:

  • A copy of Scott Tixier's book (Source Material for Jazz String Improvisation)
  • 5 morning 2-hour lectures
  • 5 afternoon virtual 2-hour group masterclasses Faculty: Scott Tixier and Special Guests. Previous guests included violinists Jean-Luc Ponty and Regina Carter
