Eduardo Lopez wins 2nd prize at the Southwest Guitar Symposium's solo guitar open division competition held in San Antonio, Texas.
The University of North Texas Center Woodwind Quintet was named quarterfinalist in the senior wind division of the 51st Annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. The UNT ensemble coached by Associate Professor of Bassoon, Darrel Hale, includes graduate students Di Cao, flute; Hyungju Oh, oboe; Brandon Von, clarinet; Victoria Donaldson, bassoon and Samuel Himes, horn. The Fischoff National Chamber Music Association sponsors this, the United States' largest chamber music competition. UNT joins our friends and colleague programs named quarterfinalists from Northwestern, Arizona State, Michigan State and Indiana Universities along with Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
DMA classical guitar student, Sergio Hernandez Felix, won Third Prize at the 7th Connecticut Guitar Festival Guitar Competition and the inaugural competition in honor of Leo Brouwer.
Masters student Kaho Mills named Euphonium Young Artist Solo winner of the Southcentral Regional Tuba & Euphonium Conference held in Memphis, Tennessee.
Cherisse Williams, DMA in Voice and MBA student in Music Business, received the Golden Eagle Award created by UNT's Center for Leadership and Service and Division of Student Affairs. "The Golden Eagle Award is the most prestigious award that UNT bestows on a student leader." The award is inscribed, "For their impact on the University of North Texas through their Commitment to Co-curricular Involvement, Engagement in Service to the UNT and Greater Communities, Commitment to Impeccable Leadership and Achievement of Academic Excellence."
College of Music graduate clarinet student, Charlotte MacDonald, has been awarded a Fulbright United States Student Study-Research Award to Poland for the 2024-2025 academic year. She will be studying at the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków with clarinetist Barbara Borowicz - clarinetist and conducting research in Polish clarinet repertoire and pedagogy.
University of North Texas musicology PhD student studying Iberian and Latin American music and who is also artistic director of the Austin Baroque Orchestra, Billy Traylor, conducted “Terremoto!,” a retelling of the story of the 1755 Lisbon, Portugal earthquake through Baroque orchestra and choir. Concerts were performed in Austin and San Antonio.
Horn music education major, Ben Ruiz, won the horn position with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band. He begins basic training following his graduation in May.
Cherisse Williams named Second-Prize Winner of the William Gammon Henry Concerto Competition and will perform at the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas, Texas during their 2024-2025 season and with the UNT Concert Orchestra conducted by Clay Couturiaux.
