In order to qualify for a Teaching Fellowship at the University of North Texas, a student must have earned a minimum of 18 graduate semester credit hours (SCHs) in the discipline in which the Teaching Fellow is teaching. This typically means that a Teaching Fellowship will be awarded to a DMA candidate only. Whether a teaching discipline satisfies this requirement is determined by the dean of the college/school in accordance with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges standards.
The deadline for submitting 2025-2026 Teaching Fellowship Application materials for both current and prospective DMA students is February 1, 2026.
The following application materials must be uploaded to the College of Music Admission site (Acceptd). Note: Current students will select “Current Music Major Award Application” as your Level, Area, and Program in the Start an Application box beneath the UNT logo.
DMA applicants who are awarded a Teaching Fellowship will be eligible to retain the fellowship for a maximum of the first three years* of their doctoral study. Current DMA students who are awarded a Teaching Fellow will be eligible to retain the fellowship up through their third year* of doctoral study, i.e., one or two years. *It is assumed these will be consecutive years.
Any absence from assigned teaching duties must be discussed with the chair at least two months before the expected absence. Sometimes opportunities arise unexpectedly, but suitable notice is required so that the integrity of the commitment from the UNT College of Music to our students is maintained.
