Esme Wong, pianist (MM ’17), is part of the short film "To the Afflicted" with Raehann Bryce-Davis, mezzo soprano, singing “All’afflitto è dolce il pianto,” an aria from Gaetano Donizetti’s 1837 opera Roberto Devereux. "To the Afflicted is a solemn remembrance, a celebration, a clenched fist around the reigns of destiny, an open hand raised in praise. College Gazette named the University of North Texas the Best Performing Arts College in the United States. According to the authors, “These [ten institutions] are exceptionally prestigious schools that regularly invite major guest artists to campus, are highly selective, and have stellar faculty who are accomplished performing artists themselves.” In addition to the significant offerings of the College of Music, the ranking includes our friends in UNT Department of Dance and Theatre along with the extensive UNT Music Library.

The Yamaha Institution of Excellence program has included the UNT College of Music in its inaugural list of 10 distinguished colleges and universities recognizing extraordinary commitment to innovation in the study of music. “These schools rise to the level of exceptional academic leadership that first inspired Yamaha to introduce this vital program and we are eager to join with them in a shared mission,” said Dan Rodowicz, senior director, Institutional Sales, Yamaha. According to John W. Richmond, dean of UNT’s College of Music, “We are thrilled to be included in Yamaha’s inaugural class of Institutions of Excellence and are eager to evolve our relationship with Yamaha Corporation of America (YCA) from a transactional one to a collaborative one. The opera training program at UNT began in 1944 under the leadership of Mary McCormic. Conducting associates receive practical experience working regularly with the wind ensembles, appearing regularly on concert programs throughout the year. Additionally, conducting associates are integrally involved in the Wind Studies summer Conductor’s Collegium, a multifaceted workshop which provide opportunities for instrumental music educators of all levels from around the world to meet and discuss common goals, shared concerns, and practical solutions with colleagues, performers and composers.

Our alumni hold prestigious singing or conducting positions with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, numerous regional opera companies, nationally prominent professional choirs (including Conspirare, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Seraphic Fire, A Room full of Teeth, the Singing Sergeants, the President’s Own Marine Band, the Navy Sea Chanters, the U.S. Army Chorus), and university faculties across the nation.
