UNT Conductors Collegium

About the Collegium

The University of North Texas College of Music is pleased to announce the continuation of our annual summer Conductors Collegium. The collegium is offered for two total weeks. Individuals desiring to attend have several flexible options from which to choose for advancing their growth. 

Public school educators are highly encouraged to attend the UNT Conductors Collegium. In conjunction with the UNT Professional Development Institute, our faculty are equipped to approve continuing education credit for each hour of participation. Individuals attending select rounds of the collegium may receive a prorated allotment based on instructional hours completed. The collegium conforms to the SBEC standard for continuing education credits toward re-certification, and this service is offered at no additional fee. 

Full Experience Overview

This is the full workshop experience including morning small group conducting sessions, discussions, lecture series, as well as afternoon conducting coaching and recorded performances with the UNT Wind Symphony. 

Full experience participants may choose 2, 3, or 4 consecutive three-day rounds. 

  • Round 1: June 16-18 
  • Round 2: June 20-22
  • Round 3: June 23-25
  • Round 4: June 26-28 

Addressing the need to find ways to connect and grow as conductors, the collegium presents an opportunity for instrumental music educators of all levels from around the world to meet and discuss common goals, shared concerns, and practical solutions with colleagues and performers. 

Non-Performer Overview

In person non-performing participants conduct and receive feedback during morning small group sessions, participate in discussion and lecture series, and observe afternoon conducting rounds for the duration of the workshop. 

Individuals wishing to observe but not conduct the afternoon sessions may register for the non-performing track. This curriculum allows participants to conduct during the morning sessions, attend discussions and lecture series, and observe coaching during the afternoon sessions.

Registration/Payment Deadlines

Registration Policy

  • A $30 application fee is due at the time of application.
  • If accepted to the program, the final payment must be made by the date above or the participant may forfeit their spot. 
Refund Policy
  • The application fee is non-refundable regardless of acceptance into the program.  
  • Full Experience
    • Requested by May 1, 2025 – Full refund less $250 
  • Non-Performer
    • Requested by May 1, 2025 – Full refund less $125
  • We are unable to process refunds requested after May 1, 2025.
  • No refund will be provided should a participant be dismissed for violating UNT policy or program rules provided on the first day. 
Sample Schedule

Morning Session Curriculum: Lecture, discussion, and small group coaching modules (daily, 9:00am-12:00pm) 

  • In the first half of the morning session, we feature lectures and discussions. These sessions will include topics such as masterworks overview, score study, repertoire and programming, rehearsal techniques, conducting fundamentals, and education philosophy and include live discussions with world-renowned guest conductors and educators. 
  • During the second half of the morning session, participants are divided into small groups (typically 9-12 players) to conduct small ensemble excerpts. Coaching in this format is provided as a supplement to afternoon activities. 

 Afternoon Session Curriculum: Conducting rounds and coaching (select any or all rounds; 1:30-5:30pm) 

  • Conducting sessions consist of live, in person individual sessions and group coaching on select master works with the collegium faculty and the UNT Wind Symphony.
  • There are four conducting rounds of three days each. Participants will receive coaching per round and perform in the concert in the evening of the third day with the UNT Wind Symphony. The performance will be recorded via wide-cam, conductor-camp, and HD audition. Files will be provided to the participants.
  • While the fee allows access to all four rounds (twelve days) of coaching, participants may attend only two or three rounds (six or nine days) if desired to maximize flexibility per each participant’s schedule needs. Those who conduct only one round must observe at lease one other. Hence, participation for only one round (three days) is not permissible.
  • Round 1, June 16-18 | Round 2, June 20-22 | Round 3, June 23-25 | Round 4, June 26-28. 
  • Example: If a participant registers for Round 2 and Round 3, they will likely observe Round 2 and conduct in Round 3. Round 1 conductors have typically attended the collegium the previous year.
  • Full experience participation is limited to 32 conductors selected by the collegium faculty through an application process.
