Faculty to include Jose Aponte, Alan Baylock, Annie Booth, Rodney Booth, Quincy Davis, Addison Jordan, Dave Meder, Davy Mooney, Lynn Seaton, Amy Shook, Carly Stock, Kim Teal, Natalie Wagner and more!
The Jazz Combo Workshop is open to musicians of all levels (minimum age 14) and provides comprehensive studies in jazz combo playing and improvisation.
The curriculum includes jazz theory and improvisation (basic to advanced); jazz history and listening (basic to advanced); jazz combo rehearsals; masterclass instruction on clarinet, bass, drums, guitar, piano, saxophone, strings, trombone, trumpet, and vibraphone; faculty concerts (each evening); and student concerts and jam sessions.
The workshop begins with registration from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Sunday, followed by a brief opening meeting and faculty concert. Combo and theory placement will also take place Sunday afternoon. These placements are meant to evaluate a participant’s skill level in the moment to adequately place them in combo and theory groupings of similarly skilled players. It is not necessary to prepare any special music for the combo placement audition, but we do recommend continuous practice of common chord changes and improvisation.
On Friday, all participants will perform in public combo concerts in the UNT College of Music; family and friends are encouraged to attend. The concerts will end no later than 6:00pm at which point the workshop will conclude.
Participants residing on campus must provide their own bedding (extra-long twin size), pillows, towels, and toiletries.
