This gorgeous, rarely performed opera by Puccini tells a story reminiscent of La Traviata, with a worldly courtesan falling for a young poet of good family and then deciding she must relinquish him for his own sake and the sake of his family. Their love starts out with sublime poignancy, becomes rhapsodic, and ends in heartbreak.
