Based on a short story by Karen Russell, Proving Up is a story about the American Dream.  A Nebraskan family is set on "proving up" to obtain the deed to the land they have settled in the 1870’s. The most difficult requirement of the Homestead Act was a glass window.  Ma and Pa Zegner send their youngest son Miles to share their only glass window with the neighboring homesteaders when the government inspector is scheduled to visit.  Through a series of ghostly encounters and ever deeper tragedy, the opera leaves the audience questioning the price we pay for some of our most tightly-held dreams.
