Founded in 2018 by Professor Tixier, the Jazz Strings Lab at the University of North Texas (UNT) is a unique pioneering ensemble and course integrating various musical styles. This innovative program features a blend of classic jazz standards, specially arranged for the group, alongside studio orchestra-style movie scoring and diverse alternative styles. The ensemble boasts an eclectic mix of instruments, including 20 string players (violins, violas, and cellos), flutes, French horns, harp, vibraphone, and a traditional jazz rhythm section comprising piano, double bass, and drums. The Jazz Strings Lab is renowned for its dynamic collaborations with visiting guest artists. Some of its notable recent collaborations include performances with esteemed artists such as Regina Carter, Kurt Elling, and Matt Jones, enriching the university's musical landscape.
