BA in Music History

Bachelor of Arts with an Emphasis in Music History and Literature

Candidates for the Bachelor of Arts in Music with Emphasis in Music History and Literature must meet the following requirements:

1. Hours Required and General/College Requirements: A minimum of 120 semester hours, of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree as specified in the “General University Requirements” in the Academics section of the Undergraduate Catalog and the College of Music requirements. A limit of 60 credit hours in music may be applied to the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree.

2. BA Music Major requirements: Completion of 37-39 hours of music including MUTH 1400, MUTH 1410, MUTH 1500, MUTH 1510, MUTH 2400, MUTH 2410, MUTH 2500, MUTH 2510, MUMH 1600 (may be used to satisfy the Visual and Performing Arts requirement of the UNT Core Curriculum), MUMH 3500 and MUMH 3510; 2 hours of MUAG 1013 and MUAG 1014 (may be waived by successful completion of Piano Proficiency Examination); 8 hours in applied music, concentration level (MUAC); 6 hours of MULB enrollment.

3. Other Course Requirements: PHYS 1270 (may be used to satisfy a portion of the Natural Sciences requirement of the University Core Curriculum). Foreign Language (12-20 hours of which a minimum of 6 are advanced credit hours). Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree should consult their advisor about core requirements.

4. Minor: Optional.

5. History Electives: 9 hours selected from MUMH 4050, MUMH 4070, MUMH 4760, MUMH 4770, MUMH 4780, MUJS 4470, MUET 4500; MUMH 4900-4910 (with consent of music history faculty mentor).

6. Thesis Project: 3 hours from MUMH 4920 or MUMH 4951.

7. General Studies Electives: 18 advanced credit hours. 18 advanced credit hours of courses must be from courses outside of the College of Music (3000-level or higher).

Other Requirements:

  • In order to be accepted to the Music History and Literature Emphasis, students must submit two writing samples to the music history area. This may be done as early as the spring semester (March 1) of the freshman year or at any point thereafter (it is strongly recommended to submit before the completion of the sophomore year). The first sample is a personal statement. The second sample should be a paper that the student has written for any college-level class, with the professor's comment and grade on it. The music history area will assign a professor to serve as mentor to students whom it accepts as majors. Students who are rejected may apply only one more time, in a subsequent semester, to the Music History and Literature emphasis.
  • Students should choose the General Studies Electives credits in conjunction with their mentor (music history faculty). Recommended fields include (but are not limited to): Philosophy, History, Art, English Literature, and Foreign Languages.
  • German is the recommended foreign language if the student intends to pursue musicology at the graduate level; another language may be more appropriate if the student has alternative career goals. The language should be selected in consultation with the student's mentor.
  • Students must complete all music history credits with no grade lower than B.
  • Proficiency Examinations:
  • Theory Proficiency Examination.
  • Piano Proficiency Examination.
  • Computer Proficiency Examination.
  • Successful completion of Upper Division Examination in MUAC applied lessons.

General Academic Requirements

  • Completion of University Core Curriculum (42 hours). See "University Core Curriculum Requirements” in the Undergraduate Catalog. Some courses required on degree plans may be used to fulfill requirements under the Visual and Performing Arts, Natural Sciences, and Discovery/Capstone categories of the University Core Curriculum.
