Building on a long tradition of excellence, UNT's music history students and faculty foster humanistic enquiry within the world-renowned College of Music.
Our faculty cultivates a wide range of intellectual approaches and research practices, with expertise spanning centuries of history across several continents, and exploring music across genres. The area's dedication to scholarship facilitates broader conversations within the College and beyond. Our faculty's work appears regularly in the top conference programs, journals, and book series in our field, garnering international recognition.
Our graduate programs in musicology prepare students for careers in scholarship and teaching at colleges and universities. We offer these degrees:
a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in Music History and Literature
a Ph.D. in Music with a Concentration in Musicology.
Students wishing to pursue a career in music librarianship may earn a MS with a Major in Library Science and an Emphasis in Music Librarianship concurrently with one of the graduate degrees listed above. Our students are exposed to innovative pedagogical methods in curricula for majors and non-majors alike. Close faculty mentorship ensures that our students have successful, rewarding experiences in the classroom as teaching assistants and fellows. The interaction between research and teaching also lies at the heart of our seminars.
We are particularly proud of the spirit of collaboration and collegiality among our students. Specific examples include an annual Graduate conference organized by the Division's graduate association (GAMuT), workshops on career-related issues, and group research projects, such as the edition and publication of Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine and his opera L'incoronazione di Poppea with renowned publisher Bärenreiter.
