The Woodwind Area at UNT provides students with a comprehensive, forward-thinking musical education.
Our acclaimed faculty consist of nationally and internationally recognized artists
and pedagogues. Under the tutelage of dedicated faculty instruction, students can
pursue degrees at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral level in flute, oboe, clarinet,
bassoon, saxophone or multiple woodwinds. Instruction prioritizes preparing graduates
for careers as well-rounded orchestral and band instrumentalists, chamber musicians,
teachers, and leaders in the music industry. Other pertinent offerings include our
graduate wind quintet, woodwind pedagogy and literature classes, , award-winning Entrepreneurship classes, and woodwind repair coursework.
Students develop skills through private instruction, performances, and group learning
in masterclass settings. Our UNT Chamber Music program offers students the chance to collaborate in small ensembles with virtually
any instrumentation, receiving personalized coaching while engaging in performances
and recording projects. Our Center Wind Quintet has been in the Fischoff Competition
each of the past two years. Additional opportunities for ensemble skill development
are available through the renowned UNT Wind Studies ensembles, UNT orchestras, our contemporary ensemble, NOVA, and our Early Music ensembles--giving our students
the chance to perform new and standard works that stretch their abilities in our state-of-the-art
Murchison Performing Arts Center.
Our alumni hold positions in leading US orchestras (including Boston, Cleveland, Dallas,
Milwaukee, Orlando, and others) and US military bands including the D.C.-based U.
S. Marine “President’s Own”, the U.S. Army Pershing Band, the U.S. Navy and Air Force
Bands and numerous regional military bands, and on Broadway. Many of our graduates
serve as educators from elementary to university level, in the United States and abroad.
Others can be found recording for major motion picture soundtracks and television
studios, publishing scholarly work, and serving as administrative leaders in the music
industry.
In addition to the comprehensive offerings at UNT, woodwind students perform in numerous
well-paying professional orchestras in the broad Dallas-Ft. Worth cultural region.
They also hone their teaching skills through many Teaching Fellowships and Assistantships
and in private teaching in secondary school programs throughout the region.
