Willem van Schalkwyk

Namibian pianist Willem van Schalkwyk has appeared in recital as soloist, collaborative artist, and concerto soloist throughout the United States, Central and South America, Europe, and Southern Africa. As collaborative artist Willem has performed with instrumentalists from orchestras that include the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Dallas Opera Orchestra, and the Utah Symphony Orchestra. Willem has served as pianist and vocal coach at the Santa Fe Opera, Arizona Opera, the AIMS program in Austria, Utah Opera, the Taos Opera Institute, and the Opera in the Ozarks.  Recent highlights include returning to the Utah Opera as guest pianist and coach for Thaïs and making his company debut with Opera Colorado with Der fliegende Holländer, as well as working on the world premiere of The Righteous by Gregory Spears and Tracy K. Smith at the Santa Fe Opera. He looks forward to his mainstage debut with the Dallas Opera in 2026 as assistant conductor for Verdi’s Don Carlo. Willem holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Brigham Young University, and Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Piano Performance from the University of North Texas. He is currently Assistant Professor of Collaborative Piano and Vocal Coaching at the University of North Texas, after previously teaching at the University of Northern Colorado and Southern Utah University.
