Music Annex
Gudrun Raschen has extensive solo, orchestral, and chamber music experience on double bass and cello. She has given concerts in the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, Poland, Finland, Italy, Germany, Vietnam, South Africa, and Namibia. She has taught and performed at the Pan American Music Festival in South Texas (2008), International Chamber Music Festival in South Africa (2005/2012), International Bass Convention in Poland (2011), Oficina de Música in Curitiba, Brazil (2011), International Chamber Music Festival in Positano, Italy (2011/2013/2015), the Arts Festival Autumn Melodies in Vietnam (2015/18) and Performing Arts Festival in Hawaii (2016/17/18/19). In addition, Gudrun helped establish the Mittenwald International Double Bass Masterclasses in Germany (2006), where she taught for several years.
Raschen has performed with Cape Town Philharmonic, Natal Philharmonic, Fort Worth, Richardson, Wichita Falls and Miami symphony, Dallas and Texas Chamber orchestras and in early music concerts with the American Baroque Opera, Denton Bach Society, Orchestra of New Spain, Texas Camerata, Fantasmi, Fleurs de Lys, and Ensemble VIII. She has toured with these ensembles to Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico and Vietnam.
Students have won the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition, the American String Teachers Competition (both Junior and Senior levels,) the Eisenmann International Concerto Competition, second prize at the Sphinx and third prize Prix Orford Musique competitions, and first prizes at Louisiana Bass Festival Solo/Orchestral competitions, and the Denton Bach Society Solo Competition. Her High School students have regularly placed in the top orchestras at TMEA, and several won first chair in Texas All-State Orchestra.
The double bass studio at the University of North Texas fosters an environment of respect and belonging, where everyone feels welcome and encouraged to pursue their dream. It aims to help students fulfill their greatest potential and enrich each other through their individual experiences, different backgrounds, and unique personalities. We believe that this makes us collectively stronger, more creative, successful and resilient.
