Dolores August

Dolores August, a proud alumna of the University of North Texas College of Music, bridges artistic training and professional success as Career Development Specialist and adjunct faculty, leading career development initiatives for more than 1,600 music students and teaching Music Business and Entrepreneurship.

Dr. August directs large-scale professional programming, employer and alumni engagement, internship pathways, and industry partnerships connecting UNT musicians to careers in performance, education, arts administration, entrepreneurship, and emerging sectors of the music industry. She works closely with faculty and external partners to ensure that artistic excellence is matched with professional fluency and long-term sustainability. She has consistently been awarded the UNT Star Performer Award in consecutive years.

Dr. August’s work as a career development leader is informed by a multifaceted professional background spanning performance, arts administration, entrepreneurship, teaching, and nonprofit development. Her experience includes roles as a church music director, arts administrator and development officer, collegiate and private instructor, and founder of August Music Services, a music teaching and contracting business through which she managed a large studio and coordinated professional musicians. This breadth of experience allows her to guide students with practical insight into the diverse and evolving careers available to musicians.

A specialist in historical performance, she performs on Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Modern flutes. Praised for her “winning performance” by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, she has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Europe, with performances at Southwark Cathedral in London, the De Groate Kerk in Sint Jacobiparochie, Église Saint-Louis-en-l'Île in Paris, and the Prescott House in Boston. She has collaborated with ensembles including Queen’s Baroque, the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra (principal flute), the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra, Texas Camerata, Canto Armonico (Boston), and the Amherst Early Music Festival.

She has been featured as a soloist with the Harvard University Choir and performed by invitation at the White House with the Pipers Professional Flute Choir. She served as administrator for the Harvard University Choir on international tour to London, Paris, and Helsinki and performed solo flute for Lord Runcie’s Memorial Service. As a conductor, she has led combined church choirs accompanied by an orchestra comprised entirely of musicians from the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. She maintains an active national and international performance schedule on both modern and historical flutes.

Dr. August has premiered new works for flute and baroque flute, with compositions dedicated to her by Larry Bell, Carson Cooman, Karl Henning, Stephen Lias, and others, and appears on recordings with the Harvard University Choir, Adoramus Vocal Ensemble, and the UNT Wind Symphony. She has presented and moderated panels at the National Flute Association and delivered lectures on music history and symbolism, including a presentation on Mozart’s Masonic symbolism in Die Zauberflöte at the Grand Lodge of Freemasons in Massachusetts.

She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in Historical Performance from Boston University as a full-tuition scholarship recipient. Her doctoral lecture-recital, Der Dilettant: Salon Music for the Flute in Early Nineteenth-Century Germany, combined scholarship and performance on period instruments to illuminate the intimate salon tradition of early Romantic Germany. She also holds a Master of Music degree from UNT and dual bachelor’s degrees in music education and performance from Florida International University.

In addition to her career leadership, Dr. August serves as adjunct faculty at UNT and Dallas College, teaching Music Business, American Music, Music Appreciation, and Applied Flute. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the New Texas Symphony Orchestra, contributes to fundraising and development efforts with the Lewisville Lake Symphony Orchestra, and has held leadership roles with the Texas Flute Society.

Her office is located in the Music Building, Room 204. Students may schedule appointments through UNT Navigate or contact her at 940-369-7583.
