The Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance – Piano Pedagogy (DMA) is a modern, rigorous, and comprehensive program designed for pianists who aspire to excel as artist-teachers at an advanced level.  Students in this program study solo repertoire while also receiving intensive training in advanced piano pedagogy. The program is ideal for strong performers who are intentional about teaching excellence and whose goals include teaching in higher education.

Audition Requirements

Applicants must meet the same repertoire requirements as outlined for all DMA Performance applicants, including both the screening and live audition/final audition recording. Currently, applicants prepare a 45-minute program of repertoire from memory that best represents their artistic personality. Twenty minutes of this program is selected for performance by the faculty at the time of the audition.

Additionally, applicants must submit:

          • A 20 to 30-minute video of the applicant teaching a private lesson with intermediate to advanced repertoire;
          • An example of scholarly writing;
          • A written statement of teaching philosophy;
          • One or more topics of pedagogical interest that might lay the foundation for a dissertation.

Based on initial review of both the performance audition and pedagogy materials submitted, applicants may be invited to participate in an in-person or virtual audition/interview
