George Papich taught at Northern Michigan University before moving to UNT in 1967, serving as a professor of viola for 33 years. He was appointed as Regents Professor in 1988 in recognition of outstanding teaching, research and service to the profession.

After retiring, he returned to UNT serving as adjunct professor of chamber music and director of the Center for Chamber Music Studies. He served in those capacities from 2002 through 2019. On the occasion of his second retirement, the George Papich Chamber Music Studies Competition at UNT was named in his honor.

The George Papich Chamber Music Competition at UNT celebrates student excellence in chamber music performance.  All students registered for chamber music at UNT may enter this competition which is held during the spring semester each year. First, second and third prizes are awarded.  Students may speak with their chamber music coach for additional information.

The competition is funded in part due to a generous donation from an anonymous donor.
