The late Horace Brock and the late Euline Brock ('74 Ph.D.) have left the College of Music a $6.5 million estate gift – one of the largest of its kind at the University of North Texas. "Euline and Horace Brock were truly impactful citizens of this university, this community and the world," says John Richmond, dean of the College of Music.

Landon Chang was named winner of the 2021 National Collegiate Solo Competition sponsored by The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own." The honor includes a performance with the Army Band, in Washington, DC.

Andrew Trachsel (MM '05, DMA '07), Associate Professor of Wind Studies and Chair of the Division of Conducting and Ensembles along with Regents Professor of Music and Director of Wind Studies, Eugene Corporon, have been published in Teaching Music through Performance in Band Volume 12. They both selected the repertoire while Trachsel served as editor. Daniel Cook, Lecturer in Wind Studies and Director of Athletic Bands contributed a section of teacher resource guides.

DMA student and Teaching Fellow in the Division of Vocal Studies, Bree Nichols, was named a Fulbright Program scholar. Her work in the Czech Republic will create the first anthology of Czech art songs while including public performances and collaborative efforts with Czech universities.

Scott Scully, (BM ’99) tenor, made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Young Prisoner in From the House of the Dead in 2009 and begins his 11th season as a performer with the Metropolitan Opera. He is an affiliated Grammy winner for his participation in the LA Opera recording of Corigliano’s The Ghost of Versailles. In recent seasons, he has added Joe in La fanciulla del West, Remendado in Carmen, Gastone in La Traviata, Borsa in Rigoletto, Messenger in Samson et Dalila, Domo I in Der Rosenkavalier, the Dancing Master in Manon Lescaut, Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro, 2nd Priest in Die Zauberflöte, and Young Servant in Elektra.
Courtney L. Wright was recently announced as one of 20 recipients of the ASCAP Foundation 2021 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards for her work for big band, Like Thad. Three of the 20 award recipients are alumni or current students of University of North Texas.

Texas Society for Music Theory - TSMT awarded Yiyi Gao) the Colvin Award for best student presentation at its annual meeting. Her presentation was entitled "Unveiling the Poetic-Musical Narrative and the Incomplete 'Urlinie': Recontextualizing Robert Schumann's Song 'Wehmut' Op. 39/9."
Joseph Nunez (BM ’18), was named most outstanding double bass instrumentalist of the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Auditions (SOPA) Excerpt Competition (2021) sponsored by the Sphinx Organization with the goal of job placement for musicians of color in American orchestras.
MidAmerica Productions tapped Ryan Sullivan, (DMA ’19) to conduct a concert of Felix Mendelsohn’s Jesu, Meine Freude and Antonín Dvořák’s Te Deum. He is Assistant Professor, Director of Choral Activities and Vocal Studies Coordinator at Arkansas State University.
DMA student Sungyun Kim won first prize in the Bill Hall Pipe Organ Competition while Jonathan Story, GAC student, received second prize and best hymn award.
The Southern Plains Chapter of The Society for Ethnomusicology awarded its 2020 Vida Chenoweth Prize for best paper to Yang Chen (MA, Ethnomusicology, ‘20). His paper is titled “Sounding the Ancestors: Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw and the Ancestral Spirit Imaginary.”
Jacob Nydegger (MM ’20, BM ’17) was awarded 1st Prize in the Senior Category of the 2021 Grand Prize Virtuoso Competition. As part of his award he will be making his performance debut in London at Royal Albert Hall, Elgar Room.
