Robert Truan is pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Conducting at the University of North Texas. Previously, he taught public high school band in Georgia for eleven years: five years at Whitewater High School and six years at Decatur High School respectively. Mr.
Truan's marching bands have earned seven Grand Championships with consistent Superior ratings. They have marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland and the Inaugural Christmas Day Parade in Prague, Czech Republic. His concert bands have been the featured guest ensemble at the University of Georgia's JanFest in 2014, Music for All's Southeastern Regional Concert Festival at Georgia State University in 2017, and the Southeastern United States Concert Band Festival at Troy University in 2020. In 2018, the Decatur High School Wind Ensemble won The Exemplary Performance Award from the Georgia Music Educator's Association as well as two American Prizes: Band/Wind Ensemble Performance - High School Division and the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for Performance of American Music. Mr. Truan has experience teaching at all levels of music instruction. As a part of his duties at Whitewater High School, he was the band director at Brooks Elementary School and assisted at Whitewater Middle School and Bennett's Mill Middle School.  Many of his students have won scholarships to continue their music-making at the collegiate level, and his IB Music students have consistently scored the highest from any subject area.

Mr. Truan graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Georgia (2009), where he continued to complete his Master's in Music Education (2012). He is an active judge, clinician, and performer and spends his spare time transcribing and composing new music. He was recently invited to present “Young, Dumb, and Broke: Reflecting on the first Ten Years of Teaching” at the 2020 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. His affiliations include Phi Kappa Lambda's National Music Honor's Society, National Association for Music Education, Georgia Music Educator's Association and the National Band Association. He and his husband, P. Seth Thompson, are happily married and have seven wonderful plants together.
