Raymond Rowell is Assistant Dean for Scholarships and External Affairs for the College of Music at the University of North Texas.  In that role, he is responsible for the strategic planning and operational oversight of the scholarship functions for the college, aiming to maintain a highly talented student body that properly represents a diverse population of qualified students likely to succeed in its programs. He also oversees the college’s communication and marketing efforts and works to connect the college with a variety of organizations in the surrounding communities. Raymond has been at UNT since 2009.

He has served as a member of the Plano Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors and is a graduate of the North Texas Business Council for the Arts’ Leadership Arts Institute and current member of its Leadership Arts Alumni. At UNT, Raymond has served as Co-Chair for the UNT College of Music Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is a member of the UNT Black Professional Network, and has served as a representative to the Staff Senate. He was also a Steven Miller Outstanding Employee Award recipient. In 2023, he received an Obelisk Award from Business Council for the Arts in the category Outstanding Leadership Arts Alumnus.

Within his external affairs portfolio, Raymond has recently:

  • Planned and launched a new $3.5 million virtual private lesson program in collaboration with the 14th largest school district in the United States;
  • Secured funding for, planned and launched a pilot program to provide no-cost music lessons to local children in foster care in Denton County;
  • Secured funding and planned for the UNT Music in the City program to present a series of concerts in Dallas County during calendar year 2020, pivoting during the Covid-19 pandemic to activities in support of our program partners;
  • Secured funding for and collaborated in the planning of a one-day festival of international music (Hear the World) and ongoing community engagement serving the Vickery Meadow neighborhood in Dallas;
  • Negotiated the establishment of a graduate internship agreement between UNT and a Dallas-based children's choir;
  • Overseen the Rainbow-Froehlich Outreach Program, a concert series serving residents in assisted living facilities in Denton;
  • Curated a concert series serving the Robson Ranch community. 

Raymond holds an undergraduate degree in cello performance from the Harid Conservatory and a master of music degree in cello performance from Ohio University (Athens).  He was a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, a member of the Winston-Salem and Fayetteville Symphony Orchestras and worked for a number of years in retail management in Southern California.
