Organizational Summary:
Young Musicians is a year-round, summer and after-school music program designed to nurture promising futures for youth in Southern Dallas. In collaboration with community partners, including Dallas ISD, Young Musicians provides music education, instruments, and performance and mentorship opportunities at no cost. Currently Young Musicians works on site at five schools in Southern Dallas, serving children from 2nd through 5th grade.
Job Summary:
The Young Musicians Teaching Artist is a dynamic educator who teaches individual, small, and large group classes to students in grades 2-5. The classes are based on student level/age. Embracing the Young Musicians educational philosophy, the TA helps guide the musical development of the program's
students through these classes. Classes include instruction in instruments such as flute, violin, cello, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone, as well as choir, drum circle, music theory, and social/emotional skills. This methodology aims to simultaneously foster both students' instrumental skills (i.e. technique, learning standard repertoire) and creativity (e.g. improvisation and composition), as well as provide a caring, cooperative community with positive role models and high expectations.
Responsibilities:
- Teach classes in accordance with the Young Musicians curriculum and educational philosophy
- Serve as a consistent and compassionate mentor to Young Musicians students
- Hold students to high artistic standards, cultivating both their technical and ensemble skills
- Embrace Young Musicians' mission, goals and guiding principles
- Assist with the implementation of systems, standards and evaluations related to student progress
- Perform administrative duties essential to running one's own classroom, including photocopying, room setup/breakdown, lesson planning, etc.
- Supervise students during transitions and break time
- Attend required concerts, meetings, events and professional development sessions
- Maintain professional, prompt lines of communication with Dallas Symphony staff
Qualifications:
- Passion for working with youth and desire to serve as a role model to students
- Strong classroom management skills

Considerable experience teaching beginner - intermediate level students, preferably
in a group
setting

In-depth knowledge of beginning music pedagogy and repertoire. For string instructors,
training
in Suzuki, Rolland and/or O'Connor methods preferred.

Willingness to jump in and embrace Young Musicians approach to music-making, including
creative composition, improvisation and playing a variety of musical genres
- Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively
- Punctuality, professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills
