M.A. with a Major in Music

Our Master of Arts with a Major in Music program offers concentrations in Composition, Ethnomusicology, Musicology, or Theory.

Admission Requirements:

  • Apply for admission to UNT through the Toulouse Graduate School (tgs.unt.edu).
  • Apply for admission to the College of Music through the online application for admission, audition, scholarship, fellowship and assistantships
  • Applicants for the MA with a concentration in Composition must submit a composition portfolio.
  • Submit the following materials through the music application:
    • A resume
    • Three letters of recommendation by persons who know the applicant personally, professionally and academically.
    • Examples of scholarly writing; a research paper, a published article, and or an essay that demonstrates the ability to address significant issues pertaining to the area of study.
    • Submit a statement of personal interest, to include a statement indicating reasons for interest in pursuing graduate study in the chosen field.
  • Evaluation of transcripts from previous degree(s): N.B. Please DO NOT send transcripts to the College of Music. They are part of your application to UNT’s Toulouse Graduate School. After Toulouse evaluates your documents, they will forward copies to the College of Music for review. Your transcripts will be evaluated and notification of required leveling courses will be sent by the Graduate Studies Office after you receive notice of your admission.
  • Attend all orientation sessions scheduled by the Director of Graduate Studies in Music.
  • Take the Graduate Placement Examinations (GPE) given by the College of Music during new student orientation - held the week before classes begin.
  • Effective for the Fall 2024 admission cycle, we no longer require submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or UNT Graduate Writing Exam. Admission decisions will be made holistically based on submission of both the UNT and College of Music applications and supplemental materials, interview/audition, etc.  

Following review of completed applications and supplemental materials, select applicants will be invited to campus for interviews.
