
Julie Gray (b. 1987) received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance and a Bachelor's Degree in Composition at Illinois State University in 2009. She is currently working on her Master's in Trombone Performance at the University of North Texas. Her teachers in trombone include John Seger, Stephen Parsons, and Jan Kagarice. Her teachers in composition include David Feurzeig and Martha Horst.
Julie has performed in multiple chamber ensembles at Illinois State University over the years, including Trombone Quartet (2005-2009), the Madrigal Brass Quintet (2007-2009), and also various large ensembles as well She continues to perform in large and small ensembles at UNT, such as the UNT 2 o'clock Lab Band, the 3 o'clock Lab Band, the U-Tubes, UNT Baroque Orchestra, UNT Symphony Orchestra, Trombone Choir, and a trombone quartet. Some notable professional experiences include performing in the January showing of Spamalot in Peoria, IL (2009) and the Illinois Central Jazz Train (Peoria, IL, 2007-2009).
Some distinguished awards include the John Philip Sousa Band Award (2005), Presser Foundation Scholar (Illinois State University, 2008), Charles L. Bolen Scholar (Illinois State University, 2007), Friends of the Arts Scholar (Illinois State University, 2005-2009), semifinalist of the Eastern Trombone Workshop National Solo Competition, Fort Myer, VA, Division II (2008), finalist of the International Women's Brass Conference Solo Competition, Bloomington-Normal, IL, Category 1, 2006, Honorable Mention for the International Trombone Association Alto Competition (2009), and winner of the 2009 Illinois State University Concerto-Aria Competition, Illinois State University, 2009.
Julie was a finalist for the 2010 Eastern Trombone Workshop Tenor II Category. She also received First Alternate for the 2010 International Trombone Association Alto Trombone Solo competition, and she received an Honorable Mention for the 2010 ITA Robert Marsteller Tenor Trombone Solo Category. In 2011, she received Honorable Mentions in the ITA Alto Solo and Trombone Quartet Categories (with the UNT Graduate Trombone Quartet). She was also a featured Guest Artist at the first annual San Jacinto College Brass Symposium in 2011. She is also an alumni member of the Delta Omicron National Music Fraternity, Omicron Omega Chapter.
