Carl Lundgren

Carl Lundgren is from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and is pursuing his Master's degree at the University of North Texas, where he also completed his Bachelor's degree.  During his time at UNT, he has studied with Jan Kagarice, Tony Baker, Vern Kagarice as well as Steve Wiest.  He is a former member of the UNT Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and six-time Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band, whose CD "Lab 2009" was nominated for two Grammys.  During his 3 years in the One O'Clock, Carl toured Europe and Thailand, and performed at Birdland in New York, and Catalina in Los Angeles. He has performed with such artists as Dave Brubeck, James Carter, Rich Perry, Pete DeSiena, Brad Leali, Denis DiBlasio, Lyle Mays, and Wayne Bergeron.

In his first year at UNT, Carl formed the Maniacal 4 Trombone Quartet with three of his freshman peers.  Coached by Jan Kagarice, M4 won the 2009 International Trombone Festival's Quartet Competition, after a second place finish in 2008.  Since then, M4 has become a sponsored group of Antoine Courtois Paris, playing recitals and clinics at various schools, festivals and conferences.  M4 has performed in DFW, Chicago, Austin, Salt Lake City, Sweden, and Denmark, and was a guest artist group at the 2009 Brazilian Trombone Festival in Belém, Brazil.  For more information about Maniacal 4, visit www.maniacal4.com.  Carl plays a Courtois AC440BR.

An arranger/composer of many styles, from classical to jazz to rock, Carl writes for quartet, trombone choir, big band, and the award-winning jazz trombone group the U Tubes.  In addition, he has studied arranging with Richard DeRosa and Akira Sato.  Carl has had some experience working with Lyle Mays, and is a freelance writer in DFW.  He is a member of the U Tubes, and is also an alumnus of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, where he played and recorded for 3 summers. 

In 2009, Carl placed first alternate in both the Van Haney orchestral excerpt class and the Marsteller solo class of the International Trombone Association’s competitions.  This year, Carl will be competing in the finals of the 2011 International Trombone Festival Alto Competition, in Nashville, Tennessee.
