Dr. Fang Ling Lu

Dr. Lu is Associate Professor in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) at the University of North Texas (UNT). She received her MS in SLP from the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. from the University of Memphis. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Medical Speech Pathology from the Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Prior to joining UNT in 1997,Dr. Lu was a faculty in Otolaryngology at the University of Miami School of Medicine for four years.

Dr. Lu's research interests have included speech and voice changes as a function of degenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis), aging, medications (e.g., antidepressants), surgeries (e.g., deep brain stimulation), and maladaptive behaviors (e.g., vocal abuse and misuse in musicians). She has collaborated with researchers from medical schools to investigate changes in speech and voice following surgical procedures of the larynx and the brain. More recently, she has studied collaboratively with other UNT researchers on the effect of antidepressants (SSRIs) on speech and voice function. Currently, she is collaborating with faculty at the UNT Center for Music and Medicine to identify risk factors of vocal tract injury among woodwind instrumentalists.

Dr. Lu is currently serving as the Director of Graduate Studies for SLP in the Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences at the UNT. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in medical speech pathology.
