UNT Jazz Student Wins Grammy
On February 8th, 2009, UNT graduate student Duane Hargis was the proud recipient of a Grammy award, together with his band Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution.
Hargis was admitted to UNT in 2003, after going through a rough period that saw him living in his car and nearly flunking out of college in San Antonio. While at North Texas, he played trumpet for various Lab Band sections and studied with jazz faculty members such as Jay Saunders, Mike Steinel and John Murphy. He received his Bachelor’s degree in jazz studies in 2007 and proceeded to work on his master’s degree the following year.
In 2008, Hargis joined Austin based band Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution, after having followed them since his high school days in San Antonio. He began touring with the 8-piece group on weekends while serving as the Four O’Clock Lab Band’s lead trumpeter during the week. The Tejano band’s newest album, “Viva la Revolution”, snatched a Grammy award in the Best Tejano Album category.
Hargis currently lives in Denton with his wife and two children.
