I am not sure about you but for me, normally when I think of Stockholm I don’t really think of Kayaking so much, but more motor and sail boating. But I must say, Kayaking might have been the best way to really explore the coast of Stockholm and see how beautiful the land is here.
For some reason summer is lasting unusually long in Sweden this year so we still have great weather, but in a few weeks it will start getting very cold very fast. So this Sunday I went out with a group of my new friends and we decided to take advantage of the weather while we still have it and go out kayaking for the day. Our housing campus is on a peninsula in northern Stockholm and we have a beach, that is a local hang for students, not but a 10 minute walk away from our rooms. But after walking down the coast about 30 minutes to find a rental company, the 6 of us rented three tandem Kayaks and went out to explore. We went along the coasts of Brumsviken and Lilla Värtan which are the lakes surrounding where we live. It started out a bit cold in the morning, but by about 12:30 it was perfect out. From the water we had the chance to see a lot more of the land then we are used to, including a lot of traditional Sommarstugas (Swedish summer houses) and a lot of beautiful parks and trails by the water. We actually went all the way up to our Lappis beach and stopped for lunch and a bit of nap time on the sand. Once we were ready to go again, we took a bit of a longer trip back to return the kayaks and were already for a warm meal and a good nights sleep. Its nice to get away from out cooped up parties and practice rooms sometimes and get outside a bit. Its also a great way to see the city from another angle. I hope the nice weather lasts a bit longer, but I guess we’ll just have to take advantage of it while its here.
