Dan Weiss started playing the drums at the age of 6. He studied privately since he began. His main teacher as a child and teenager was Jeff Krause. While in high school he studied classical piano and classical composition. He studied drums and composition at the Manhattan School of music. His drum teacher was John Riley for 4 years and his composition teacher was David Noon. Dan also studied frame drums with Jamey Hadaad. He has performed and or recorded with David Binney, Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Vijay Iyer, Miguel Zenon, Wayne Krantz, Kenny Werner, Ritchie Beirach, Rez Abbasi , Tim Berne , Ben Monder, Uri Caine, Village Vanguard Orchestra, and many others. He has been touring Europe and North America extensively for the past seven 12 with many different projects. He has also played in South America and Asia and has recorded for Omnitone, Fresh Sound/New Talent, Arabesque, Pi, Criss cross, Enja , Between The Lines, Act, Hat Hut, and Auand record labels. He is presently on around fifty available recordings. Dan has been studying tabla for the last 14 years exclusively under the guidance of his guru Pandit Samir Chatterjee. He has performed classical Indian music in India and the U.s. with Ramesh Mishra, Mandira Lahiri, Subra Guha, Anoushka Shankar, Joyas Biswas, Snehashish Mojumdar , Anupam Shobhakaa and Steve Gorn. He has also performed in recitals with his teacher in Kolkatta, India. Weiss has four recordings under his own name. Two are solo recordings which contains traditional tabla repertoire adapted to the drumset in a classical manner. These are the first ever of their kind. The other two are trio cds which includes Jacob Sacks on piano and Thomas Morgan. " Jhaptal Drumset Solo, " " Timshel, " "Tintal Drumset Solo, " " Now Yes When " At the moment Dan is busy performing , teaching , studying ( Tabla with Samir Chatterjee , piano with Sophia Rosoff , north indian vocal with Samarth Nagakar ) and most of all working every day to improve to craft which in turn will help him grow as a person which in turn will hopefully help other people in any small capacity. In addition to his performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mr. Babor regularly participates in concerts for the Philharmonic's Green Umbrella Series. His solo engagements have included performing the Xylorimba Solo in Oliver Messiaen's "Des Canyons Aux Etoles" with Esa Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mr. Babor received his B.M. degree from Texas A&M University, Commerce in Commerce, Texas and his M.M. from the Cleveland Institute of Music in Cleveland, Ohio. Jim has studied with Richard Weiner, Paul Yancich, Cloyd Duff, and Doug Howard. He has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, the Kansas City Symphony, and the New World Symphony. In April of 2012, Jim will be the featured soloist in Jennifer Higdon's Percussion Concerto during the University of Southern California's "Visions and Voices: The Arts and Humanities Initiative". Jim is a Pro Mark/Evans Orchestral Artist and an endorser of Pearl/Adams Percussion, and Sabian Cymbals. He is also on the faculty of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. 9 - Matt Penland, Senior Percussion Recital - 8:00 PM - RH 26 - Kevin Raab, Senior Percussion Recital - 8:00 PM - MEIT 30 - Brian Jones, Guest Timpani Clinic 1:00 PM - RH - $5 admission for non-percussion club members ![]() Brian Jones is Principal Timpanist in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as Principal Timpanist, having joined in 2011 after having served thirteen seasons in the same chair with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Jones has also performed as guest principal timpanist with the orchestras of Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, and Columbus, and has performed as a percussionist with the orchestras of Chicago, Boston, Houston, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. Brian has toured and recorded with the Empire Brass Quintet, appeared as a performer on NBC's The Today Show, and was featured in a command performance for Prince Rainier of Monaco. Mr. Jones earned a C.D. Jackson Award from and spent two summers with the Tanglewood Music Center, and was a Charlie Owen Scholarship winner at the Aspen Music Festival. As an undergraduate at The University of North Texas, he was a member of the Grammy-nominated One O'clock Lab Band, playing drumset and bass trombone in alternate semesters. Brian enjoyed more experience as a trombonist with the Dallas Trombone Exchange and the Dallas Jazz Orchestra. As a fellowship Master's student at Indiana University, where he earned a Performer's Certificate, Jones was Principal Timpanist with the Terre Haute Symphony for two seasons. After he concluded his formal education with a Professional Studies Certificate from Temple University in Philadelphia, Brian led the Percussion and Jazz Studies departments at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas for one year. Mr. Jones was a fellowship percussionist in the New World Symphony in Miami Beach for three years, where he was also a concerto competition winner. Mr. Jones served as Adjunct Professor of Percussion at The University of Michigan from 2001 to 2011, was a featured clinician at the 2004 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Nashville, and has given presentations and masterclasses throughout the U.S. and Japan. Brian has been recorded in a wide variety of musical settings on the Amazing, Argo, BMG, Crystal, Naxos, New Composers, Telarc, and UNT Jazz labels, has been published in the North Texas Percussion Press and the Percussive Arts Society, and endorses products for Adams/Pearl, Promark, and Evans. He has premiered solo works with the Detroit Symphony, the New World Symphony, and The University of Michigan. She-e Wu has an active career as a performer, teacher, and composer. A member of the Bob Becker Ensemble, she has appeared as a solo artist at numerous conventions, including the Percussive Arts Society International Conventions, National Percussion Convention of Spain, and the International Percussion Convention. She has also performed at Journees de la Percussion, NancyPhony Festival, perKumania Festival, PercuPassion Festival, Back Symposium/Bach Variation Festival at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, International Percussion Festival, and Giornate della Percussione in Italy. Wu has been a guest recitalist and clinician at universities and conservatories in France, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, England and Germany and has served as a judge for the PAS Composition Competition and International Percussion Ensemble Competition. An active composer, she has had works premiered at the Journees de la Percussion festival and the Taipei International Percussion Convention. Wu was formerly a member of jazz faculties at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and is a clinician/recitalist for Dynasty, Zildjian and Innovative Percussion.
