Paula Homer
Paula Homer, professor, is Director of Opera. As such, she functions as both producer and stage director for the University of North Texas Opera productions and oversees the training program and curriculum. Since joining the faculty of the College of Music in 1992, she has produced and stage directed over 40 full productions; three have been collaborative opera productions with the A. Steffani Conservatory of Music in Italy, and two others have won national first place awards for opera production from the National Opera Association. Ms. Homer holds music degrees from Indiana University and St. Mary's College at Notre Dame. In addition to her academic work, Ms. Homer was co-director of the Apprentice Artists Program and stage director for Des Moines Opera from 1990-2002. She was also founder and artistic director for OperaWorks, Inc., a traveling professional opera company from 1982-1992. Her teaching specialty is in the area of singing/acting. In this field she teaches courses at UNT and is a clinician for workshops in singing/acting at National Opera Association conventions, National Association of Teachers of Singing conferences, and for Texas Collegiate Opera Network. She has also led workshops at numerous universities, including University of Texas at San Antonio, Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons, Webster and Washington Universities, plus the Harrower Summer Opera Workshop, Minnesota Opera Workshop, Orlando Opera and Des Moines Metro Opera. Before joining the faculty at UNT, Ms. Homer was Director of Opera and Choral Activities at Angelo State University.
Stephen Dubberly
Stephen Dubberly, Associate Professor in the Division of Conducting and Ensembles, serves as music director of UNT Opera and teaches courses in opera repertoire. He is also associate conductor and chorus master for Fort Worth Opera. He has conducted for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Des Moines Metro Opera, the Knoxville Opera Company, San Antonio Opera, Cartersville Opera, American Bel Canto Opera, Teatro Goldoni in Venice, Italy, Teatro Accademico in Castelfranco Veneto, Opera Athens (Georgia), the University of Tennessee, and Webster University. He has also conducted frequently for Amarillo Opera, including productions of Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, The Barber of Seville, Don Pasquale, Rigoletto, Pirates of Penzance, Falstaff, I pagliacci, La bohème, Gianni Schicchi, the regionally-broadcast production of Gene Murray’s The Wage of Sin, and Carmen.
At UNT, he has conducted productions of The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, The Magic Flute, La clemenza di Tito, L’elisir d’amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, La traviata, Roméo et Juliette, Die Fledermaus, the Bartered Bride, Falstaff, I pagliacci, La bohème, Cendrillon, Werther, Madama Butterfly, The Merry Widow, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, the world premiere of Hans Schaeuble's Dorian Gray, Albert Herring, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Turn of the Screw, Dialogues of the Carmelites, The Crucible, A Little Night Music, Into the Woods, and Ned Rorem’s Our Town. Upcoming productions include Regina with UNT Opera as well as Don Giovanni with Abilene Opera, The Italian Straw Hat with Amarillo Opera, and HMS Pinafore with San Antonio Opera.
Stephen began his musical training in Montevideo, Uruguay, and received the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Yale University. He lectures frequently for the Dallas Opera Company. He is also director of music at Christ Presbyterian Church in Flower Mound, Texas.
