New Alumnus to Academy

Austin Ford (BM ’21), trumpet, was named to the Jazz Aspen Snowmass 2021 Academy. The program “identifies and assists the most talented artists embracing jazz.” Academy membership comes with a full-cost of attendance award. This is the second alumnus included this Summer.

Alumnus Begins Label

Music attorney William J. Metzger (BA ’11) announced the creation of his own record label, Affiant Records. Based in Dallas, Texas, Affiant Records is a multi-genre label focusing on talent that brings about a positive change in the world through music and entertainment.

Saturday Sounds

Jolene Masone (DMA ’16) and Brian McKee, DMA, University of North Texas College of Music academic counselor for graduate studies and both members of the Premier Lone Star Wind Orchestra, directed by UNT Regents Professor of Music Eugene Corporon, perform. Their bassoon duo performance of Three Arias from “Barber of Seville” by Gioacchino Rossini, was recorded at Moody Performance Hall Dallas.

Professor Honored

David Childs, Professor of Euphonium, and co-director of the UNT Brass Band, was honored by the International Tuba-Euphonium Association (ITEA) with its biennial Excellence in Recording Award for his Symphonic Euphonium II CD featuring premiere concerto recordings with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The Awards were established by the ITEA to foster, encourage and recognize excellence in the field of recording.

Instructor Featured

Megan Heber, University of North Texas Adjunct Instructor of Arts Management, was a featured panelist for Business Council for the Arts (BCA) Leadership Arts Alumni (LAA) discussion series, Connect for the Arts. These online forums are for learning and discussion about challenges facing the North Texas arts and culture nonprofit community. She is also Executive Director of the Children's Chorus of Greater Dallas.

Professor Teaching in Italy

Jennifer Lane, Professor of Voice, returned for a third year of teaching at the Festival “Musica in Laguna d’Arte” Corsi Musicale Internazionale Estivi 2021, Associazione Lirico Musicale Clodiense in Regione Veneto, Città di Chioggia. The course concluded with a concert of 17th and 18th century music in Auditorium San Nicolò, a building dating from year 1211.

Student Published in Brazil

Marcel Castro-Lima, Brazilian composer and PhD student published a new paper about the Composer/Performer collaboration with the clarinetist José Batista Júnior and the compositional process of the piece, Interference, for Bass Clarinet and Electronics. The paper is published in vol.34 (2021) of the Brazilian Journal of Music.

The goal of the Summer Big Band program is “to identify and assist the most talented artists embracing jazz.” Academy membership includes a full-cost of attendance financial award. This is the second of three UNT students/alumni included this Summer.
