Toward the end of the degree program students must pass proficiencies in music education, piano, and their performance concentration (instrumental or vocal). In addition, music education majors must complete a 16-week student teaching experience at the elementary and secondary level in an area school. Student teaching is the culmination of the music education degree. Before applying for student teaching, you must have passed all proficiencies and met all grade point average requirements. Plus, additional prerequisites for student teaching must be met from the UNT College of Education. While student teaching, you are assigned a cooperating teacher and a university supervisor who will help guide and develop your teaching skills. During student teaching, you must take and successfully complete the TExES test, which will certify you to teach in the State of Texas.
