The Master of Music Education degree is designed to focus on teaching skills, school administrative and leadership skills, and current trends in the field of music education. Basic differences exist between the Master of Music Education (MME) and the Master of Music (MM in music education). These differences are:

  1. the Master of Music Education (MME) requires 36 hours of course work while the Master of Music (MM) degree requires 32
  2. the Master of Music Education degree (MME) does not necessarily include a thesis.

Recitals are not required for either degree, but students are encouraged to perform in solo recital.

Course Requirements

36 hours:

  • 12 hours of music education (including required courses in research and educational issues)
  • 6 hours of music (not music education or pedagogy)
  • 18 hours of electives (may be music, including applied lessons, music education or non-music courses

Acceptance Procedures:

Permission to enroll in course work

  1. Prior to enrollment:

    1. Apply for admission to the University through the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies
    2. Take the verbal and writing portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

  2. After arriving on campus for the first semester's work:

    1. Take the Graduate Placement Examinations given by the College of Music. These examinations cover music theory and music history.
    2. Attend all orientation sessions scheduled by the Director of Graduate Studies in Music.
