Fall, 2009 - MUGC 4890: 
Kodály in Context

Includes an 8-day study abroad experience in HUNGARY

Meeting Time: Fall Semester, Thursdays, 5:00-7:50

The purpose of this course is to study the pedagogical approach of Zoltan Kodály, one of Hungary’s most celebrated educators, composers, and ethnomusicologists.  This course will include a close examination of Hungary’s rich history, music, and culture.  An 8-day study abroad experience will take place in the late part of the fall semester.

Travel to Hungary: October 9 - October 18

  • A 2-day workshop at the Kodály Pedagogical Institute in Kecskemét, Kodály’s birthplace

  • Elementary, Middle School and High School observations in Kecskemét and Budapest
  • A concert at the Palace of the Arts, the newest cultural institution in Hungary – opened in

  • A concert at the internationally acclaimed Liszt Academy (http://www.lfze.hu)
  • Visits to the Kodály Museum, Bartók Museum, Liszt Museum and the Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts
  • A city tour of Budapest
  • A one-day excursion trip to the artist colony of Szentendre, one of Hungary’s most colorful
