MUMH 6160 "Alban Berg and Viennese Culture"

Margaret Notley

Alban Berg was born in Vienna in 1885, immediately before the celebrated period of the city’s turn-of-the-century culture. When he died in 1935, Vienna had already begun to capitulate to the anti-modernism and general barbarism of the Nazis. This course will survey his oeuvre within the changing cultural context of the city where he spent his entire life. Some of the readings will be music-analytical, while others will have in one way or other to do with Berg and his milieu.

A similar course was offered as “Alban Berg, ‘Master of the Smallest Link,’” in Spring 2005.
