Graham H. Phipps
Spring 2007
This course is offered as a continuation of the Invertible Counterpoint and Fugue class (MUTH 5400). The emphasis is on composition of whole contrapuntal pieces in the style of 18th-century counterpoint.
During the first part of the seminar, members will compose fugues in three and four voices using advanced techniques (diminution, augmentation, invertible counterpoint at various intervals, inverted subjects and/or countersubjects). Projects for the second half of the semester will include canonic writing and chorale prelude.
Compositional models fort his study will be taken from works of J.S. Bach and some of his contemporaries.
