MUMH 5711 Mahler’s Vienna, Adorno's Mahler

Margaret Notley

Fall 2006

The first part of this course will be devoted to surveying selected movements from Mahler’s nine completed symphonies and Das Lied von der Erde in conjunction with readings having to do with both analytical questions and the Viennese milieu that was critical to his development as a composer. The remainder of the course will be reserved for a close reading of Adorno’s Mahler: A Musical Physiognomy, published in 1960, the centennial of the composer’s birth, which marked the beginning of the Mahler revival. We shall thus be looking at this body of works from several significant perspectives. Please note that this course may also be taken at the 6000 level.
