Fall 2002
Students will be asked to consider various kinds of meaning in chamber music with piano. These can be divided roughly into three, at times overlapping categories: sociological, formal—often with emphasis on composers’ intentions—and critical/speculative. Since one objective is to foster the development of analytic skills, students will be required to work closely with a number of scores. As always in graduate courses in musicology, a larger goal will be to encourage students to think critically about how they carry out their own work.
