Dr. Mary Heiden recently completed the Ph.D. in Musicology with an emphasis in Early Music Performance from the University of North Texas. A harpsichordist and pianist, she received an M.A. from Stephen F. Austin State University and a B.M. in piano performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. Prior to coming to UNT, she taught music literature and theory and directed choirs at Kilgore College. Dr. Heiden’s dissertation on the music in the Fitzwilliam Collection investigates its stance within the eighteenth-century debate between ancient and modern music, its strong correlation with the critical views of Charles Avison, and the depth of Fitzwilliam’s advocacy for the music of Domenico Scarlatti. Her ongoing research includes the early keyboard sonata, the influence of Domenico Scarlatti’s keyboard style, and the vocal chamber music of Giovanni Carlo Maria Clari (1677-1754).
