John Murphy's full-time assignment is in the Division of Jazz Studies, where he currently serves as chair and teaches jazz history, analysis, and research methods. He collaborates with the ethnomusicology area and teaches an occasional MUET class, and served as chair of this division from 2006-2008. An ethnomusicologist who specializes in jazz and Brazilian music, he earned the Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Columbia University in 1994. He is the author of Music in Brazil (Oxford University Press Global Music Series, 2006) and Cavalo-marinho pernambucano (Editora UFMG [University Press of the Federal University of Minas Gerais], 2008).
