May 15-19

Denton, UNT's College of Music, Maps, Parking, and Transportation

Denton, Texas, is the located at peak of “the Golden Triangle,” formed with the cities of Dallas to the southeast and Fort Worth to the southwest. A typical American college-town (with two universities), Denton has a history of appreciation for music, the arts, and education. Each spring Denton hosts the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival, consistently featuring Grammy-winning groups and an annual three-day attendance of about 200,000 festival-goers.

At the center of Denton lies the Courthouse Square Historic District. The typical Texas county courthouse, built by Italian masons, is surrounded by local restaurants, retail stores, art galleries, and an ice cream shop. In addition to a variety of local businesses, the Square is the unofficial home of local music and art – impromptu performances and jam sessions frequently entertain passers-by.

Denton's University of North Texas is the flagship campus in the University of North Texas System and home of the world-renowned College of Music. With approximately 1700 music majors and over 40 student ensembles, the College of Music is the largest comprehensive music program in the United States. The College's Instrumental Studies Division is particularly proud of its chamber music program, with approximately eight woodwind quintets and the same number of brass quintets coached each semester by faculty, adjunct faculty, and teaching fellows.

Over 1,000 performances are presented annually by College of Music students, faculty, ensembles, and guest artists. Campus performance venues include the state-of-the-art Murchison Performing Arts Center and five performance spaces in the College of Music building, including a Recital Hall and the recently renovated Voertman Concert Hall.

College of Music ensemble performances are streamed live from Winspear Hall. To see and hear a concert go to our events calendar. If you are a horn player, you will save time by checking out the horn studio calendar for the semester (Spring 2012 Horn Calendar), then go to our streaming site: http://recording.music.unt.edu/live. You can listen live to any concert but can not access our archives without a UNT faculty or student ID and, for legal reasons, recording streamed concerts is not an option.
