MS/JH Early Adolescent Vocal Music Seminar
Overview: The Early Adolescent Vocal Music Seminar is offered to pre-service and in-service choral music teachers on an informal basis and free of charge. Participants are invited to attend any or all sessions and rehearsals associated with the MS/JH Honor Choir Camp (July 21-24, 2010). A minimum of 8 confirmed registrants is required.
Fees: There will be no fee to attend sessions and rehearsals associated with the Cambiata Institute of America Early Adolescent Vocal Music Seminar.

Room: If notified by June 1, college dormitory rooms can be reserved for an additional fee. A double occupancy room costs approximately $16.50 per night. For details, contact Dr. Alan McClung.

MS/JH Choral Music Teacher Training Program and the Early Adolescent Vocal Music Certificate
Overview: The MS/JH Choral Music Teacher Training Program is an extension of the MS/JH Early Adolescent Vocal Music Seminar leading to a certificate in Early Adolescent Vocal Music from the Cambiata Institute of America at the University of North Texas. Although certificate work can be completed in 3 sequential summers, a total of (4) summers is allowed to complete the work related to the certificate.
Note: At this time, credit in graduate studies is being pursued.
Year one: Attend all events related to the MS/JH Honor Choir Camp and the Early Adolescent Vocal Music Seminar. Submit a reflective paper (typed and thoughtfully constructed) that lists and describes the various teaching strategies that you plan to take back to your classroom.
Year two: Attend all events related to the MS/JH Honor Choir Camp and the Early Adolescent Vocal Music Seminar. Bring to camp a DVD recording of your teaching. After the camp, submit a refection paper that identifies those elements of your teaching that you want to keep and those aspects of your teaching that you want to change. From your experiences at the Honor Choir Camp and Vocal Music Seminar, list the sequential teaching strategies associated with teaching vocal development, pitch reading, rhythm reading, melodic reading, choral techniques, and conducting gesture.
Year three: Attend all events related to the MS/JH Honor Choir Camp and the Early Adolescent Vocal Music Seminar. Participates will be heavily engaged in observing and assigned specific up-front teaching opportunities with the early adolescent singers. Recorded teaching sessions will be used as a video assessment tool.
Each participate will be expected to develop a reflective journal that includes a guided assessment of up-front teaching experiences. Rehearsals, specific to the needs of early adolescent vocal music students, will include a variety of techniques in seven structured lessons: (1) vocal development; (2) pitch relationship and reading development; (3) rhythm reading development; (4) sight-singing development; (5) conducting skills; (6) repertoire selection, preparation and listening techniques, rehearsal techniques; and (7) classroom management skills. Each evening, participates and clinicians will come together to share and discuss the pedagogical events of the day. To complete all reflections and discussion, participants may be required to attend an extra day(s) following the closing of the camp.
Fees: There is no fee for first year participants. For years two and three, the fee is $150.00 each year. However, certificate participants may deduct $15.00 for every camper enrolled under the certificate participant’s name.

Clinicians
Dr. Alan C. McClung joined the University of North Texas College of Music faculty in 2002 as a specialist in secondary choral music education. He serves as the Director of the Cambiata Institute of America for Early Adolescent Vocal Music. Prior to teaching at the college level, Dr. McClung taught choral music at the middle school and high school level for 19 years at a comprehensive school in Atlanta. Based on his success at the middle-level, he was invited to co-edit a focus issue, “Middle and Junior High Choral Music” in ACDA’s Choral Journal in November of 2006. His articles include “Master Teachers in Middle-Level Choral Music: Pedagogical Insights and Practices” and “Wonders of Choral Music in the Middle-Level Grades: A Bit of Nature and a Whole Lot of Nurture.” His sight-singing textbook, Movable Tonic: A Sequenced Sight-Singing Method, GIA Publications, Inc. is in use in classrooms and studios throughout the United States. Structured to meet the needs of beginning, intermediate, and advanced students, this publication provides special attention to the development of choral music reading skills for the middle-level student. As a distinguished choral music educator, he has presented at state, divisional, and national music conferences in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Articles by Dr. McClung have appeared in Southeastern Journal of Music Education, ACDA's Choral Journal, MENC's Music Educators Journal, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and Journal of Research in Music Education. In 2010, he was named a UNT Honor Professor.
Dr. Rebecca Reames is an Associate Professor of Music in The Crane School of Music at the State University of New York at Potsdam where she teaches courses in music education and conducting, plus conducts two choirs. Under the direction of Dr. Reames, The Crane Touring Choir performed at the 2007 Beijing International Choral Festival, the Eastern Division American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Conference in New York City, and for the Eastern Division Music Educators National Conference (MENC) in Baltimore. Dr. Reames has guest conducted and adjudicated festival ensembles in more than a dozen states and Canada. Recently she conducted in Connecticut, Maine, Montreal, New York, Texas, Toronto, and Virginia. She has also has presented choral interest sessions at regional and national music education and choral conferences, and has papers published in three major music education journals. A native of Virginia, she taught middle and high school music in Northern Virginia for over fifteen years prior to receiving the Ph.D. in Music Education/Choral Conducting from Florida State University. Dr. Reames is a Past President for New York ACDA and served as the Assistant Program Chair for the Miami National ACDA Conference. She recently spent a semester sabbatical continuing her research interests involving appropriate literature and “singers in motion”. Summer 2011 will be her second summer with the UNT MS/JH Honor Choir.
