The UNT Orchestral Program

The orchestral program at the University of North Texas is central to a large proportion of the work of the College of Music. In addition to developing orchestral players and conductors, it serves as an essential partner in the presentation of new compositions, opera, oratorios, and concerti. Orchestral concerts primarily serve the UNT community and the multi-state region, but our orchestras have traveled to Spain, Mexico, New York City, Boston, and California. Current membership represents 25 states and 12 foreign countries.

The program consists of the Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, the Repertoire Orchestra, and the Baroque Orchestra. The Symphony's history goes back to 1938. Today the Symphony performs seven concerts annually on campus, frequently in collaboration with the Grand Chorus, distinguished guest artists, and outstanding soloists and composers from the faculty and student body.

UNT

The Chamber Orchestra is a smaller ensemble, also drawn from the top instrumental talent in the College of Music, and specializing in the literature for small orchestra and in support of UNT Opera productions. The Repertoire Orchestra provides training for both developing orchestral players and student conductors. The Baroque Orchestra performs on replicas of 17th and 18th century instruments, with particular attention to the historical performance practices associated with the music of this period.

Together, these ensembles represent opportunities encountered in few if any other university settings. The training received has led many of its members to prestigious positions and leadership posts in the top orchestras of this country and beyond. The credit for these accomplishments must go in large part to the distinguished leadership of Maestro Anshel Brusilow.
