Academic Advising

International Students

Dear Prospective International Music Student,

As you consider the University of North Texas (UNT) and the College of Music as your next possible destination for university study, we've collected general information from the College of Music (COM) and from the International Studies offices here at UNT that we would like you to know. More detailed information is available on the websites for these offices ( http://www.music.unt.edu and http://www.international.unt.edu ).

To apply for a music degree at UNT, you must submit two (2) separate applications: one, to the College of Music , and the second, to International Admissions . You must be accepted by both.

Entrance Standards Required:

  • language proficiency (example: TOEFL minimum 550 or computer score of 213)
  • GRE (Graduate Record Exam) minimum scores for graduate students
  • academic minimums (GPA) for all degree levels are required
  • International students must qualify for a US Immigration student visa , are required to submit proof of sufficient financial support and are heavily restricted from working except on campus. Refer to the website for International Studies for more detail. http://www.international.unt.edu
In addition to reading this information and our FAQs, please review both websites (http://www.music.unt.edu and http://www.international.unt.edu). You may contact me directly if you have questions about coming to UNT as a music major.

Nearly all degrees from the College of Music require that you be accepted via an audition. In certain circumstances, a recording may qualify for a conditional admission to be satisfied later by a live audition.

The International Admissions office assists with the complete process regarding immigration documents and academic admission to the University. If you are to study for a graduate degree, your papers will also be managed through the International offices.

Music applications, and audition materials should be sent to the College of Music. After you are accepted by the University and by the College of Music, the International Admissions office will mail the immigration papers necessary to apply for a student visa.

Please apply EARLY. Auditions are held in January, February, and early March for the following Fall term. Not auditioning can delay the start of your degree significantly. International Admissions currently requires six months to process most applications. If English is not your primary language, we suggest you begin your efforts now to pass the TOEFL, or its equivalent, before you plan to come to UNT. We offer an excellent language institute for learning English, the IELI. However, English classes in IELI are very costly, time-consuming and will delay the start of your degree study.

Important information including entrance scores, deadlines, tuition rates and housing costs is available on the websites noted at the beginning of this letter.

Remember, you may contact me with questions after reviewing the materials on the websites.

Sincerely,

Becky King, College of Music
